Linux antivirus for servers and desktops

Linux runs web servers, file servers, appliances and container hosts in many businesses, often with less protection than the Windows laptops beside them. Business products now cover it from the same console.

In short

Linux antivirus software protects Linux servers, desktops and container hosts from malware, cryptominers, web shells and ransomware. CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, ThreatDown, Bitdefender, Trend Micro, Sophos, Check Point, WatchGuard and Acronis all support Linux in the same console as Windows and macOS. Webroot's published support list covers Windows and macOS only.

Does Linux need antivirus?

For a business Linux server, usually yes. The idea that Linux does not need antivirus comes from desktop use years ago, when there was little Linux malware and few Linux desktops to target. Business Linux today looks very different:

  • Servers face the internet. Web servers, VPN and mail gateways and application servers are exposed to attacks on the services they run. A compromised web application can be used to plant a web shell or a cryptominer.
  • Servers handle other people's files. A Linux file server or shared storage can hold Windows malware that does not run on Linux but spreads to every PC that opens the file.
  • Attackers target Linux workloads. SentinelOne, for example, describes the attacks its workload protection looks for on servers as ransomware, cryptomining, fileless attacks, container drift, exploits against exposed services and lateral movement between workloads.
  • Containers multiply hosts. Container hosts run many workloads on one kernel, so a single compromise reaches further.

There are also compliance reasons. Cyber Essentials covers in-scope devices whatever their operating system, and allows malware protection through anti-malware software or application allow listing; our sister site explains the Cyber Essentials malware protection options. Customers' security questionnaires rarely exempt Linux.

For a single-purpose appliance supplied and patched by its vendor, follow that vendor's advice; adding software to an appliance can void its support. For everything you build and run yourself, protection belongs on the list.

Which business products support Linux

Every vendor below lists Linux support for its business product. Distribution and kernel support differs between vendors and changes with each release, so we check your distributions and kernel versions against the vendor's current list before quoting.

VendorLinux coverageNotes
CrowdStrikeFalcon sensor on Linux servers and workstationsLicensed per endpoint, same as Windows; host firewall management covers Linux
SentinelOneSingularity agent on Linux; Cloud Workload Security for servers, VMs, containers and KubernetesSentinelOne describes a lightweight eBPF-based agent for workloads
ThreatDownEndpoint Protection on Linux; Endpoint Protection for ServersServers counted separately from workstations
BitdefenderGravityZone on Linux, physical, virtual and cloudPer protected endpoint
Trend MicroVision One Endpoint Security agent on LinuxPro tier adds server intrusion prevention, integrity monitoring, log inspection and container protection
SophosServer licence for Linux servers, VMs and cloud workloadsLinux detection without a kernel module, including Docker, containerd and CRI-O container runtimes
Check PointCheck Point Endpoint Security on major Linux distributionsFeature coverage is fullest on Windows; we check Linux features for your estate
WatchGuardEndpoint Security agent on Linux workstations and serversPatch Management module covers Linux as well as Windows and macOS
AcronisAcronis Cyber Platform agent on Linux devices and serversBackup and protection on one agent; security features vary by operating system, so we confirm Linux coverage
Webroot-Webroot's published support list covers Windows, macOS and Windows Server, not Linux

If you already use one of these vendors on Windows, extending it to Linux keeps everything in one console. If you are choosing fresh, the vendors comparison sets out the wider criteria.

What to check before installing on Linux

Linux deployments go most smoothly when a little homework is done first:

  • Distribution and kernel versions. Agents are tested against specific distributions and kernels. Servers on an older or unusual kernel may need an agent update or a different approach. Products that use eBPF or work without a kernel module (SentinelOne and Sophos describe theirs this way) reduce the dependency on exact kernel builds, but still publish support lists.
  • Workload performance. Database, build and file servers do a lot of disk work. Plan exclusions for database files and high-churn directories from your application vendor's guidance, and test under realistic load.
  • Containers. Decide whether you protect the container host, the containers, or both. Sophos covers Docker, containerd and CRI-O runtimes on the host; SentinelOne and Trend Micro offer container and Kubernetes protection; how container hosts and nodes are counted is confirmed when we quote.
  • Change control. Many Linux servers run production services with strict change windows. Roll out in those windows, starting with a non-critical server.
  • Automation. Linux teams usually deploy with configuration management tools or scripts rather than an MSI. Most vendors publish packages and command-line installers that fit that way of working.

Cloud-hosted Linux workloads also overlap with cloud security tooling; cloud-security.cloud explains cloud workload protection if you run a larger estate in public cloud.

Linux desktops and developer machines

Linux desktops are less common in business but often belong to developers and engineers, who have access to source code, cloud credentials and production systems. That makes them worth protecting even if there are only a few.

The same products cover Linux workstations: CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, ThreatDown, Bitdefender, Trend Micro, Check Point, WatchGuard and Acronis all list Linux. Sophos licenses computers per user and servers separately; we confirm how a Linux workstation is counted for your licence. Expect some Windows-only features (certain device control or browser protections) to be missing on Linux, and check the ones you need.

Sophos antivirus for Linux

People often search for Sophos antivirus for Linux by name. In Sophos's current range, Linux is protected under the server licence, now marketed as Sophos Workload Protection, which covers Windows and Linux servers, virtual machines and cloud workloads with the same agent and policy. Sophos highlights Linux detection that works without a kernel module and support for the Docker, containerd and CRI-O container runtimes.

Our Sophos antivirus page explains the wider Sophos range for business, and our sister site has more on Sophos Intercept X for Server.

One console for Linux, Windows and Mac

Most organisations with Linux servers also have Windows PCs, Windows servers and Macs. Running a separate tool for Linux means a second console, a second set of policies and a second renewal, and in practice the Linux tool tends to be the one nobody checks.

When you compare products for a mixed estate, look for:

  • Linux in the same console and policy model as Windows and macOS, so a detection on a Linux server appears beside detections on laptops.
  • Consistent licensing: some vendors count a Linux server exactly like a Windows server, others use a server tier or licence. Check before you compare quotes; our business antivirus cost guide explains why.
  • The features you need on Linux, not only on Windows: malware scanning, behaviour monitoring, container awareness, firewall control or patching, depending on the product.
  • Room to grow: detection and response on the same agent if you later need deeper investigation on servers. Our EPP vs EDR page explains the difference, and endpointsecurity.uk has EDR, XDR and MDR guidance.

If your Linux servers also run backups to a separate product, it is worth knowing that Acronis puts protection and backup on one agent across Windows, macOS and Linux, although security features vary by operating system; see Acronis antivirus.

How we help

Forever Systems supplies Linux protection from the vendors above, usually as part of a wider endpoint and server estate. We can:

  • check your distributions, kernels and container platforms against vendor support lists
  • compare how each vendor counts Linux servers, desktops and container hosts
  • help plan exclusions and a rollout that fits your change windows
  • keep Linux in the same console and quote as your Windows and Mac devices

Contact us with a rough list of your Linux servers and what they do, and ask us for a quote. For Windows servers, see the main server antivirus guide.

How Forever Systems helps with endpoint protection

We are an independent UK IT and cyber security provider. We supply business antivirus and endpoint protection from several vendors, so we can recommend what fits your devices, your team and your budget rather than pushing one product.

  • Review what you have: we look at your current antivirus, your Microsoft licences and the devices you need to cover before suggesting anything new
  • Compare the options: next-generation antivirus, EDR and managed services from vendors including CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, ThreatDown, Bitdefender, Trend Micro, Sophos, Check Point, WatchGuard and Acronis
  • Licensing and quotes: the right edition and licence count for your Windows, Mac, Linux, server and mobile devices, with pricing confirmed at quote
  • Deployment and migration: we can help roll out agents, set policies and remove the old product cleanly
  • Support after go-live: help with policy tuning, alerts and renewals, with the scope agreed at quote

We can also help with the rest of your security, from endpoint security and EDR to Cyber Essentials and security awareness training.
