Does Acronis have antivirus?
Yes. Acronis's business platform, now called the Acronis Cyber Platform, includes anti-malware and anti-ransomware protection on the same agent as backup. Acronis describes the platform as formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud and says the old name is no longer actively used, so you will still see both names on quotes, invoices and older documentation.
The idea behind Acronis is that backup, security and endpoint management belong in one product: one agent on each device, one cloud console and one set of policies. For a business that already backs up with Acronis, that means antivirus can be switched on without adding a second agent.

What Acronis antivirus protects against
The base protection on the Acronis agent covers:
- Anti-malware: detection and blocking of malware on the device.
- Anti-ransomware: protection against ransomware activity, which Acronis lists as Active Protection among its security technologies.
- Protection plans: anti-malware and backup are set in the same protection plan, so a device's security and its recovery settings are managed together.

Acronis antivirus and EDR
Standard protection stops known malware and ransomware. Attackers increasingly use legitimate tools and stolen credentials that antivirus will not flag, which is where Acronis EDR comes in: it records endpoint activity, spots suspicious behaviour and lets you investigate and respond. Acronis XDR extends that to email, identity and Microsoft 365, and Acronis MDR is Acronis's managed service on top, which needs EDR or XDR on the workloads it monitors.
EDR, XDR and MDR are separate licences, not part of the base antivirus. They use the same Acronis agent, so there is nothing extra to install.

Why sharing an agent with backup matters
What makes Acronis different from most antivirus vendors is that the same agent also backs the device up. That changes what happens after an attack:
- Detect and contain: anti-malware, and EDR where licensed, stops the attack and can isolate the device.
- Roll back: with Acronis EDR, Acronis says you can reverse changes made by a specific attack without restoring the entire system, where supported and configured.
- Recover: if needed, restore from a clean backup in the same console, rather than handing over to a separate backup product.

The Acronis agent protects Windows, macOS and Linux devices and Windows and Linux servers, and Acronis also lists ARM-based systems. Virtual environments on VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V and Nutanix AHV are supported for backup. Capabilities vary by operating system, so we confirm coverage before quoting.
